  Building vs. Buying

How I Started

I became interested a little over a year ago in building my own wind turbine for my home. I studied the internet looking for free plans, but after seeing the sketchy looking free plans that were out there on the web, I decided that maybe I should just purchase a set of the instant download plans that you see advertised everywhere. Getting The Parts

Getting the parts was a little challenging (at least for me) when it came to getting the right dc motor that I wanted. I was hoping to find a steal and get one for next to nothing, but I always seemed to be a step behind the good deals.

Turns out though, I found one right under my nose when I checked my mother-in-laws' basement and, lo'-n-behold I hit the holy grail of discarded exercise equipment! More importantly, a like-new treadmill! With some quick-talking I scored the motor and I was on my way. 

Making The Wind Turbine Blades

The wind turbine blades were a cinch. Get yourself a piece of pvc sewer pipe and saw it into quarter sections and simply shape them like a propeller blade with a jig-saw. After that, sand the edges with an orbital sander and finish your blades with a few stripes of paint on the tips and they are looking pretty cool.

Setting Up A Tower

The tower probably would be the most difficult thing to find at a decent price. I got lucky. A friend of mine was remodeling his house and was getting rid of his antenna tower. I brought the forty foot section home, re-painted it, and bingo...I had a wind turbine tower!

Of, course, you can opt for just a simple pole and mount it from your rooftop. This is by far much easier. I took the more challenging route!

How Long To Build?

Acquiring all of the parts actually took longer than putting my wind turbine together. I spent roughly two weeks getting all of my parts, but only two days building the wind turbine.

I am sure most people could find parts a little quicker than me, I spent a lot of time trying to find parts for free, or next to it. Really though, the parts list provided with these wind turbine manuals are pretty clear and you should be able to get everything within a couple of days for less than $200.00.
